Location and size
Washington is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Washington was carved out of the western part of Washington Territory which had been ceded by Britain in 1846 by the Oregon Treaty as settlement of the Oregon Boundary Dispute. It was admitted to the Union as the 42nd state in 1889. In 2008, the Census Bureau estimated the state's population at 6,549,224 people.
The state is named after George Washington, the first President of the United States. Residents are called "Washingtonians" (emphasis on the third syllable, pronounced as tone). Washington is often called Washington state or the State of Washington to distinguish it from the District of Columbia (which is usually called Washington, D.C.). However, Washingtonians generally refer to the state as "Washington" and Washington, D.C., as "D.C."
Washington is fortunate to have a rich diversity of habitats and wildlife including pheasants and other upland game birds. A large variety of year-round and seasonal outdoor recreational opportunities exists in Washington. Each year in Washington thousands of pheasants are released on public lands. The idea behind the release of roosters in eastern Washington is to supplement the harvest. Typically there are plenty of pheasants around on opening weekend so most of the releases will occur periodically over the six weeks or so after the opener. That way there will be more pheasants available throughout the hunting season. Releases will also take place for the youth seasons on some of the sites in late September. In addition to the great public hunting opportunities Washington State also boasts some of the best hunting clubs in the nation.
There are hunting guides and outfitters who offer trips for a variety o animals in Washington. From small game bird like pheasant, quail, dove, duck, goose and turkey, to big game like whitetail deer, elk, bear, cougar, mountain goat, moose, and big horn sheep.
